Official.fm
Back to the music for a bit, hehe. I've updated my Official.fm with two playlists. One for forthcoming stuff (Unreleased) and one for all the stuff yet to find a home, or that might possibly never come out (Unsgined). I figured it would be a good idea to have an online catalogue of what I've been up to all in one place, so here's the links:

Silent Hill 2
It's rare that I get all fanboy-ish around these parts (is that even a word?!), but I have to kind of make an exception for this masterpiece of a game. For those of you not familiar with the game, you play James Sunderland, a man summoned to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his now deceased wife. The general tone and feel of the game is one of sorrow, mystery, regret and damnation. As the game progresses, James meets and interacts with several characters, who influence the outcome of the game, especially Maria.

There's just something about the atmosphere of this game that is magical. It sucks you in, chews you up and spits you out. There's a few games that have had this much of an affect on me, but this is one of the strongest I've felt. The main reason being the story and the music work together in perfect harmony.
The above piece is one of my favourites from the game. Akira Yamaoka is the genius behind the soundtrack.

There are several moments of brilliance right throughout the game. From where you enter the apartments and you can hear strange sounds from the balcony, or the noises coming from an adjacent room, or right up to the point where you trawl through the underground sections and encounter the demons and monsters. Some of the sounds are truly magnificent and terrifying the first time you play it.
This video is one of the best scenes in any game. This is right at the end of the game when you have to face two Pyramid Heads and then take on the evil incarnation of either Mary or Maria, depending on what choices you have made. The music is just epic and I remember the first time I played it, it made the hair on my arms stand up!
At the end, if you get the 'good' ending, you find out that the main character killed his wife after she was suffering from an illness, to stop her suffering, and because he couldn't deal with the difficulty of caring for her. Throughout the game, the Pyramid Heads that you see slaughtering people are meant to represent him and his struggle with his wife's demise. Maria, who is a spitting image of Mary, is seen being killed by the Pyramid Head a few times in the game, and then later reappearing. This is to signify what James did to his wife I believe.
Anyway, it's been a while since I've played it, so this is all from memory, so there's a good chance I might have missed something out. It's a game that really needs to be experienced, and EASILY the best in the Silent Hill series.

mnml ssgs
Strangely enough, I forgot to post up the link to the mnml ssgs exclusive mix I did a week or so back, so here it is. I'm sure the hawk-eyed among you are on this already and have digested it many times over already, but in case you missed it, here's the link:
A track list is in the works and Chris over at mnml ssgs will post it up once it's done.

More old games
So I've been going back through my old consoles and finding games that I haven't touched in years, as I've been telling you about on here and on Twitter.
I'd all but forgotten about Panzer Dragoon Saga, up until recently when I stumbled across an old Saturn site which reviews some of the classics from yesteryear. Without going into too much detail about the game or trying to review it, it's basically an RPG based around the flying dragons of the first 2 games, with 2 being one of my all time faves.

Policenauts is a very niche type of game. It's essentially a point and click adventure from Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear fame. If you were a fan of his earlier game in a similar vein, Snatcher, then you'll already be sold on this. Cyberpunk business to really sink your mind into. Until recently, you couldn't really play the game at all unless you were could read Japanese, but the awesome people over at Policenauts.net have done an amazing translation job, of which you can now patch an ISO with to play with a PS1 emulator like ePSXe, or a modded PS1. Quality stuff.

Oh yeah, there's also this curious little title. A Japanese only title for the Dreamcast, called Lack Of Love. This was one of those games that I never picked up the first time around, but I'm glad I finally got the chance to play it. It's a unique game in the way it plays out. It doesn't tell you what to do, but the general idea is you control an organism through the various stages of evolution. As you level up, new areas become available, you gain new abilities etc. It's a charming little title.

Limbo
First of all, if you are reading this and you don't have this game already for your Xbox 360, then do yourself a favour. It's worth every single penny you spend on it. The atmosphere of this game is unreal, and a lot of that lends itself to the amazing soundtrack. It ranges from ethereal soundscapes, white noise static, to eerie backdrops as you make your way through limbo.

Label update

Up next:
AUXSYM001 - Symbol #1 by ASC. 3 exclusive tracks to kick off the Symbol series. Check audio out here. Should be in shops within the next 3-4 weeks.
AUXSYM002 - Symbol #2 by ASC & Bvdub. Serious collaborations happening here with me teaming up with ambient legend, Bvdub (Brock Van Wey). 4 tracks were crafted, from beat-less ambient, right through to 170bpm autonomic styled tracks. This release is being mastered right now and will be sent for production once test presses have been approved. Audio previews coming soon.
AUXTR001 - ASC - Ambitronic EP. Auxiliary Transmissions is a new outlet for everything that's a little more suited for the headphones of home, rather than the dancefloor. The first installment serves up an EP of 4 of the deepest and sublime tracks you're likely to hear this year. Out very soon at all digital stores.
Forthcoming:
AUX003 - ASC - No Secrets (****** Remix) / No Secrets / Pulsate
AUX004 - ASC - Metronomic (Commix Remix) / Dark Star / Error Code
AUXSYM003 - Symbol #3 by Consequence
AUXSYM004 - Symbol #4 by Sam KDC
I'll announce who's done the remix for 003 when it's done, but it shouldn't be too long.
Video game classics
Bit of a nerdy post, but I don't care hah. I recently got all of mine and Christine's old consoles out of storage. For the record we have a NES, a SNES, an N64, a PS1, a Japanese PS2, a slimline US PS2, a Sega Saturn and a Sega Dremcast. I also found an old GBA and my first gen DS, both of which are gathering dust. I hardly have the time these days to sit and replay old games, but when I do, it's always a nice trip down memory lane. So here's a little round up of what I managed to dig out yesterday.

Radiant Silvergun - Sega Saturn
Classic shooter from Treasure. Japanese release only, much to the dismay of many shoot 'em up fans worldwide. The price of this game, if you are lucky enough to find one, has gone through the roof in recent years due to the rareness and demand for it. Expect to be looking at a couple of hundred dollars for a copy, plus you also need a Japanese Saturn or a modded Saturn to be able to play it. The term 'they don't make 'em like this anymore' is very apt for this title.
Quick YouTube video of some gameplay footage, in case you've never played it, or just fancy a nostalgia trip.

Ikaruga - Sega Dreamcast
Ikaruga is Treasure's (loose) sequel to Radiant Silvergun, but takes things in a different direction. Everything is now about a balance between yin and yang. You hit white enemies with your red/black beams, and vice versa. You can absorb white shots when you are in white mode and vice versa also. Sounds easy? Yeah, try playing it.. it's not!
Quick YT vid here:

Rez - Sega Dreamcast
This game is one hell of an experience. It blew me away when I first played it and did the same when I got the HD remake on the 360 when it came out a while back. You shoot in time with the music. As you advance through the layers, the track playing builds. An amazing concept really. It features some great music from Ken Ishii & Adam Freeland to name but a few.
