New Studio PC time

So believe it or not, the core of the ASC studio is still a P4 3.2ghz with 2gb RAM running Windows 7.  It was alright for the time, which was about 5 years ago or so, but these days it's really showing its age and struggles with the latest software and plugins.

The ultimate dilemma now is putting together a new studio PC.  Before any of you say Mac, a) I'm happy with PC thanks, b) I can get same specs for a hell of a lot cheaper, and c) Christine wants to keep it PC anyway, so it's out of the question!
Anyway, I spent about 4 hrs tonight looking over Tiger Direct where I will be definitely purchasing my parts to build a new PC.  The biggest thing at the moment is finding out what would be the best fit for audio production and my wallet.  I was checking out the AMD Phenom II X6 (six core) chips earlier and nearly sided with one, but after reading certain benchmarks, it seems that even the cheapest Intel (quad core) i7 (the 870) beats it in most tests!  It also seems like having 16gb RAM in a machine would be overkill, as most programs won't utilise it.  Whether this is correct or not, I'm not sure.

Before I bore you all to death with what I got bored to death with tonight, I guess I'll end this by asking if any of you people out there have a good recommendation on a processor/motherboard combo.

Cheers!

ASC Loopmasters Sample Pack

So I figure I may as well announce on here that you'll be able to add some ASC flavour to your studio productions very soon. I've recently completed a sample pack for Loopmasters, which has just been approved this week. I'm not sure of release details just yet, but as soon as I know, so will you.

A fantastic review of Nothing Is Certain

Had to post this, as getting the sort of praise I got in this review really makes it all worthwhile for me.  Thank you Fwd.dj & Anish Patel for the review.  Made my day!

Two older mixes

Two mixes I did a while ago now for promotional purposes.  I found them on a backup DVD and thought I'd upload them for public consumption.  You'll probably recognise all the tracks and be able to fill out a track list yourselves, so have at it.

Moods and effects

I gotta stop writing when I'm in a funk or in a dark mood, or perhaps I should write more when I'm feeling like that?  One thing is for sure, whenever I sit down in the studio, the track is definitely influenced by how I'm feeling at the time.  I went in with the intentions of putting some lovely sounding chords and keys down and trying to build something around that.  Instead, I ended up writing bleak, dreary, dark, ominous minimal sounding stuff with lots of shuffle and noise layers.  The track is sounding great, but as I said, it just wasn't the vibe I was going for!  I have a feeling it will end up on the CD I'm doing for Auxiliary some time next year, judging by the sound of it so far.  More on that project later, as I'll probably say too much and then change my mind at some stage.

Anyway, AUX003 should be done in time for a speedy release in 2011.  It'll feature 2 tracks by me, which will be Dark Star, and a short dark ambient piece called Error Code.  On the flip, Commix will be taking on remix duties for Metronomic.  I've got no idea whether they are gonna do it at 170 or 140 yet, but I've told them to just get creative and do whatever feels right.  Whatever happens, it will be top notch no doubt.

Since I've been neglecting this blog with info and updates over the last month or so other than the sporadic posts here and there, I'll make it up by giving away a few tracks just before Christmas.  2010 has been a great year for me, so what better way to thank you all for your support than some music for free, right?  Yeah, I think so too.

Right, I'm off to bed.
